sex rehab, really?

now, jason and i watch these shows like "Intervention" and newer ones like "ADDICTED" and stuff like that.... i don't know why i watch these shows. i guess in some way, shape or form, it makes me think about how blessed i am when i sit and complain about the petty things going on in my life, and well, we all know that i like constant reminders about why i shouldn't be complaining and how much worse life could really be....

i don't really understand addiction, but believe that many people have some sort of "addiction" to an extent. i think my addiction is starbucks. and i don't want to go to rehab for starbucks. i just want a starbucks everyday.... but my starbucks isn't hurting anyone (except for me and my poor teeth who are trying to keep up with ridding themselves of the sugarbugs).... i don't know what a psychologically diagnosed addiction feels like.... i don't understand it and i probably won't ever. i know what it felt like to be INSECURE.... and leads you to do compulsive things, but does that make you an addict? i don't know. i don't think so.... i think anyone can be termed an "addict." i also think anyone can be termed "bi polar" or with "ADHD."

How loosely are these terms thrown around? I don't doubt that there are truly people who are ill.... whether it be mental or physical health; there are sick people out there. I get it, but I just find it so incredibly hard to believe that there are THIS many ILL people out there. REALLY Jesse James? Sex Rehab? Really Tiger Woods? Sex Rehab? I'm not entirely sure what the intention is and if they think that throwing themselves into rehab takes away the actions they've done, (not so much that I care about the celebrity's lives.... don't believe me? go here) BUT, i think this all boils down to a lack of accountability.

People are weak.
People don't ever want to hold themselves accountable for their own stupid actions and downfalls.
The people who cheat are INSECURE....
bottom line.
they don't hold themselves accountable.
and that can damage a whole lot more than just their marriages.
i don't think that going to sex rehab erases poor judgement.
i don't think going to AA erases poor judgement either.
i DO hope that people learn from their ignorance, but also learn to blame not another soul on this planet but themselves.
if you aren't happy, then GET OUT OF YOUR SITUATION!!!!!
don't stay and make yourself the victim and then use that to justify your stupid actions.
duh.

oh well. i guess as all the addicts would say "you don't understand it and all that i've been through."

to that, i can say, "you're right.... i really don't."

but with my therapist, i have learned that WHAT I do is MY choice."

and as far as my starbucks addiction.... you have no idea all that i've been through....

by any and ALL means, this isn't meant to offend ANYONE.... i KNOW there are people out there who have been helped very much so by rehabs of many different sorts.... and i am thankful for that.... do i think everyone in the world needs rehab? no.... i think everyone can benefit from regular therapy though.... 90 days doesn't cure someone who isn't an addict.... much more than 90 days can cure someone who isn't an addict.... it's taken me MANY of years to come to the point that i'm at now, and there's still SO much more work to be done.... oh man, i better just stop here, my brains getting all tangled up. i can feel it.

It is now SOP (standard operating procedure) for celeb's to get a free pass on anything on anything they do. Be it stupid, hateful, dishonest, illegal, or whatever by:
1. making a public apology
2. going to rehab

These idiots have nothing in common with true addicts. I respect the addict more...

Yeah, I think the celebs use it as a PR stunt. In some warped way they are hoping the world will see their human side instead of their self indulgent insanity. FYI...I have a serious addiction to those Cadbury cream eggs on and off for the last 20+ years. I take it one day at a time.

Bbbbut Ashley, yyyyou just don't understand! It's not my fault, I have an addiction. I can't seem to stop myself from leaving crazy comments. I need therapy!

I agree Ashley!! I, by all means, aren't saying that people don't need Rehab. But I do have to say, people rely too much on blaming their actions on an illness, instead of taking responsibility for what they did. Back in the day, there were so much less diagnosis', and much less "wrong" with people, than today. We all had our problems. With me, and my background of child abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse, I could have been diagnosed with bypolarism, depression, and anxiety because I felt all those things. (according to the definitions these days) But those dysfunctions can't be healed with a 90 day stint in rehab. It takes a long road to recovery and with me, 25 yrs.+ of therapy, has gotten me to the "happy" and "content" place that I am today......

@ Pat, yes, the public apology thing and then rehab.... that's what they think will make it all better.... not even for celebrities, but people in everyday life too (well, minus the public apology).... so what if their apology doesn't make nightly news, they apologize for their stupid decision and think that AA or sex rehab is the solution and that everything will be okay and that all should be forgiven. no. it doesn't work like that. not here anyway....

@Copyboy. i am very much a texture person and visual person and have not tried a cadbury egg for the simple fact that it looks like a real egg. i'm pretty sure i'd get ecoli or salmonella or whatever you'd get from eating a raw egg.... you should DEFINITELY seek therapy for your addiction. in fact, i think i will call addicted for you.... that is TERRIBLE news. you should give your 30 days notice now. it is not a safe place for you to go back to.

@Ms. Anthropy, we'll call intervention for you. ;) but then again, your horrible addiction isn't harming anyone (like my starbucks).... so maybe i'll skip the intervention with you. therapy probably wouldn't hurt. i think it does everybody good.... kinda like milk.... =)

@buymebarbies. you have come a long way and not played the victim role. it is YOU who i admire and why i'm in therapy. (not because you totally jacked me up, well not entirely at least,) but because you give me all the hope in the world that our life can turn out however we want it to and we can be happy if we want to be happy.... thanks for setting a good example for us, and for putting me in therapy years ago. =)

I'm not owed the thanks, Ashley! It's you who choose to continue your self improvement.....I introduced you to therapy, but it is you that continues to find the happiness you see in me!! Look how far you've come. Great Job!!!

I don't have the addiction gene (well except, maybe for Peeps) but I do know some people who have fought out of addiction and admire them for the changes they've made.

It's so funny that you blogged about this, because I was just talking with a friend a few days ago about Tiger Woods and Jesse James and how everyone is so quick to call everything an addiction. Apparently, guys can't just be regular ol' cheating scumbags anymore, they have to go and slap a label on it to sidestep the blame. It makes me sick. A lot of people want to have their cake (a family and kids) and eat it too (a posse of strumpets...or man hoes).

Ahem.

I am totally addicted to cookies, pie, chips, and Starbucks chai lattes (preferably grande). My hips definitely don't lie. :)

I absolutely understand 1000% the Starbucks thing. Chai tea lattes are my addiction. Other than that though, no, I don't understand it either, but I have seen it and I can see that it is horrifically painful to be an addict.

I understand how it looks. With Tiger Woods and Jesse James getting caught, the only way to save their relationships and their public image is to show the public that they're making an effort.

However, if you want to know anything about addiction, turn to Dr. Drew. He's an expert on addiction, and amazing at everything. His show Celebrity Sex Rehab shines a light on celebrities that really do have problems and actually can't have meaningful relationships because of their addictions. I used to think that it was a joke, but some people are really troubled by this. Dr. Drew provides really interesting insight into why these people are the way they are. It's really and interesting show....
